If you are considering a dental implant, you will first meet with your dentist for an evaluation to determine whether you are a candidate for an implant. This normally involves an oral exam and x-rays to assess the bone structure. Your dentist will discuss all of your treatment options, and answer any questions you may have. If you decide to proceed with an implant, the dental implants procedure will be completed in three stages.
First, the titanium post is placed. The dentist does this by making an incision into your gum tissue and inserting the post into your jawbone. You are then stitched up, and the post is given time to fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration, which can take several months.
Once the post and bone have fused together, an abutment is attached to the end of the post. The gums are given time to heal around the abutment before proceeding to the third stage.
After all healing has taken place, it is time to place the false tooth. A crown is made and attached to the abutment, after which time you are free to eat and chew normally. Instead of a single implant and crown, sometimes two implants are used together to support a dental bridge.
